I missed that discussion too, but here's my usual plan of attack:

{basic}
* delete all the para and char format tags
* save as mif & re-open as .fm file
* import formats from clean template

{tables}
* delete all your table formats
* for each table, copy the cells into a *new* table, and then *delete* the
old table completely

{hidden pages}
* delete all your master pages and everything on the reference pages
* import formats from clean template

{last resort}
* edit the MIF file, doing search-and-replace: find the bad, replace with
the good... keep in mind that when the MIF file specifies a font, it
specifies a font *family*, too, and you have to change them both.
