In San Francisco, $18 an hour might hire someone who could wait tables. A
one bedroom apartment without any parking in a risky neighborhood costs at
least $1200 a month. Until last December, toilet paper cost as much as $5
a roll. $18/hour means a take-home of about $2217 a month, or $1017 after
paying the rent. This forces such low wage earners to double, triple,
quadruple up in cramped, dumpy apartments and live on cheap diets. Health
care, education, marriage, children, a new car: right out unless a way out
can be found. $18 a hour is barely a living wage in the Bay Area in
general.
