The only special characters allowed in the Autonumber Format field of the
Para Designer are the

     tab (\t)
     bullet (\b)
     em-rule (\m)
     en-rule (\=)
     em-quad (\sm)
     en-quad (\sn)
     thin-space (\st)
     numeric-space (\s#)

If a forced linebreak is inserted (\r), it will be gone when next you open
the Para Designer.

Here is the method I use.  It used to work without kludges and workarounds
up until FM4 but partly broke in FM5 and later; fortunately, there is a
workaround.

On your master page, create linked text frames in the same flow to hold the
chapter number and the chapter title, which will be in the same paragraph,
thus

In your Autonumber Format field set up a number string like this:

     C:\t<$chapnum>\t\sm \t                   /* Note the SPACE between
\t\sm and \t  */

In the paragraph designer, set a (first) Centre Tab at the exact middle of
the smaller text frame for the number.  Set a (second) Left Tab at the
exact right border of this text frame.

                            ?           ?
                            |           |
                            +-----------+
                                  ^     ^
                             centre     left

In the paragraph designer, set a (third) Centre Tab at the exact centre of
the large text frame for the title.

  ?                                                                      ?
  |                                                                      |
  +----------------------------------------------------------------------+
                                     ^
                                   centre

Now, when you apply your chapter-title format

@    the first tab centres the chapter number in the small text frame,
@    the second tab pushes the title text out of the first text frame into
the second text frame, and
@    the third tab centres the title text in the large text frame.

Before FM5 you didn't need to include the breaking space ( ) and the
em-quad space (\sm) but from FM5 and on, if you don't, the first one or two
characters of the title text will be missing in some parallel universe,
neither in the small text frame nor the large.  If at first it doesn't work
you may have to fiddle with adding more breaking spaces and hard spaces
after the second tab (\t)

I logged this as a bug when first encountered in FM5 but nothing happened,
so could Adobe please fix things so they return to the nirvana of FM4?
