Non-western font publications

Help!

My ignorance of non-western font typesetting & font handling is
profound.  Fortunately I have not been asked to do any Asian-text
work, however, my crystal ball indicates that a couple Russian jobs
are coming on fast.

Can anyone suggest the most efficient and direct way to learn about
this subject?  

The idea of a Frame/PDF white paper was recently floated.  How about a
non-western font white paper?
