Subject: STOP PRESS! Acrobat Distiller doesn't check for sufficient room

All:
>From time to time a number of colleagues have experienced Acrobat Distiller
aborting during the first phase, when the page numbers scroll up the log
window. Usually there is a complaint about some PostScript operator.
We found that sometimes not setting Generate Acrobat Data in the print
dialogue would help (even though we really wanted the PDF to have
hyperlinks). Or sometimes saving the file in which it aborted to MIF then
to binary again would help. Or moving the source file to another machine
would help.
Finally we have found the cause: insufficient disk space on the volume in
which the Distiller executable resides. During the first phase (processing
PostScript file) Distiller apparently does not check with the OS as to
whether there is sufficient disk space for temporary intermediate files,
but just aborts with a PostScript error that, most times, does not make
sense. When we deleted a few old folders on one colleague's machine the
problem disappeared completely.
The reason that not generating Acrobat data sometimes worked was that the
intermediate file(s) were just smaller enough to fit the space available.
However, before the second phase (generating PDF) or the final phase
(moving files), Distiller DOES check if there is sufficient disk space and
displays an appropriate message otherwise.
So now you know.
